Question by Ricky Bobby: Digital Photography?
I would like to get into digital photography in a serious way. I’ve got my SLDR camera + accessories and am studying my exposures and focal lengths. I’ve heard of amateur photographers getting noticed, even selling their work. How does one get started? Should I start some website and post my photos? What’s the best way to get noticed? And how do you actually go about selling them?

Let me start by saying this: it’s very difficult to sell photographs. That being said, the easiest way to get started is to do a blog. You can post images there and describe what’s in the pictures and how you did the shots. Also, PBase is an online photo gallery where you can sign up and start uploading images. There is some amazing stuff there – definitely worth looking at even if you don’t sign up. Then, there are online stock agencies. I would suggest Alamy because it’s relatively easy to get started. Then, finally, check into a local photo club. Clubs often have competitions in different categories, and these things are a good learning opportunity. You can see what others are doing and you can learn from judges comments. Sometimes, you may get to exhibit photos with the club for sale at local municipal buildings, etc. Good luck!

I was wondering, what is the best way to get into the wedding photography business?

Also, does it make a difference that I use film, not digital?
I’m not new to film or photography, I’ve got it all down and I’m used to my main three cameras, and know everything there is to know about these specific cameras, and how to get good tones and shots from them.

Digital is more convient as you don’t have to change film during the ceremony and since you don’t have to worry about the lab *censored* up your images.

But you could try contacting one of your local professionals (in photography) and asking if you can be their assistant… etc. I’ve never done this personally, but that’s how I’d go about it.

Once you gain experience you could then take peoples weddings on your own just through word of the mouth.

I do not have any of those issues but below I listed a few links that could possibly be of help.

Photo.net is a very big online photo community and you can post in the discussion forums area and see if anyone there can be of help.

Photography with film is a lot different from digital. For one thing, it’s done in a dark room. You need the right chemicals, an enlarger, etc. Plus there’s a completely different feel to the way the images are produced after the point and shoot part. Also, because of all the chemicals, film photography is more of a health hazard, especially color film!

Digital photography is all handled on the computer instead of in the dark room. You use a computer, photo editing program, and a printer to produce your photographs. Again it just feels different.

I’d suggest trying out both of them before making a decision. I prefer digital (because I can’t stand the smell of the dark room), but a lot of people really love film. And pinhole cameras only work in the dark room (they’re a lot of fun!).
